How did a geeky kid from California get to drink beers with Bono, watch Duran Duran while hanging out with the Barenaked Ladies at the Playboy Mansion, have lunch with Ringo Starr, and get cheered on by Robin Williams?
"Never Trust A Grown Man With A Ponytail" is a memoir of life in the radio industry, told through rapid-fire short stories. Author Jay Nachlis takes readers backstage to experience all the awesome and awkward moments, from a one-sided conversation with Prince to an after-party where one of the world's hottest bands soaked in a hot tub and sang karaoke.
In this book, discover personal tales previously known by few. These include sneaking into a convention, keeping a radio station on the air when the DJ was unable to, answering request lines during the 1989 San Francisco earthquake, and getting kicked out of an awards show.
There are emotional journeys as well.
Discover the gut-wrenching moment as a teenager that inspired the author to dedicate much of his adult life to raising money for sick children.
Mostly, "Never Trust A Grown Man With A Ponytail" is a joyful ride. Come along, as a regular guy lives vicariously through his musical heroes thanks to a life in the radio industry.
“In the same way Forrest Gump seemed to always be in the right place at the right time, that is Jay’s life in radio. His ability to share these moments is captivating. I started reading and couldn’t put it down.” - Dave Rose, President/Deep South Entertainment

If you ever dutifully documented the songs from Casey Kasem’s American Top 40 in a spiral-bound notebook, if you ever were the 7th caller who won a prerelease copy of Steely Dan’s Aja, or if you ever spent Career Day alongside local DJ “Wrong-Way” Roger Neal (real name: Neal Rogers), then this book is for you. Most radio-geek dreams end after that Career Day stint, but those of Jay Nachlis carried on, enabling him to share the collection of coast-to-coast adventures in and around radio land that make up Never Trust a Grown Man with a Ponytail. The perpetually good-natured Nachlis, an airwaves jack of all trades for a couple decades plus, comes off as a Zelig (Google the reference, young people) for the FM/AM set, popping up in U2’s dressing room and in a hot tub with the Barenaked Ladies and receiving kudos from Ringo Starr and Robin Williams. Constructed as a series of snapshot stories, Never Trust a Grown Man with a Ponytail offers inside-baseball stuff from the world of radio, teenage remembrances that give additional heft to Nachlis’ grown-up tales, and plenty of musician elbow-rubbing. In radio-speak: it has a strong signal.Product details

Never Trust A Grown Man With A Ponytail How A Regular Guy Lived A Rockstar Life Jay Nachlis 9780692516775 Books Reviews
Being in radio is the greatest job in the world. And this book's terrific because you'll find out of all the reasons WHY it's so great.
This might be the final book about radio that anyone who's not IN radio will want to read. People aren't interested in radio anymore, they just wanna Rock. And unlike most people who've been in radio for awhile, I'm fine with that. I got into the business BECAUSE I love to Rock, not in order to "Have a Career in Radio". Jay got into it for BOTH reasons, and that's why he's the best. Buy - and enjoy.
A very real and true-to-industry account of what radio is all about. Loved the backstories and detail. Highly recommend for anyone in or considering a career in radio. The madness is real!
...for a fascinating read and engaging story!
Fascinating behind the scenes journey through the radio business in the late 80's, 90's, and 2000's. Great stories and plenty of unexpected celebrity encounters. Can't believe someone lived this life at such a young age!
Very enjoyable read. The inside look into the life of a radio personality and program director was exciting and eye opening for me. Towards the latter chapters of the book you really get a look at who the author is as a person through his stories. From crazy radio stunts to his work with cancer charities, Jay has had a life. I strongly recommend this book.
